Petroleum is what we commonly refer to as oil and is formed over millions of years from the remains of animals and plants. Petroleum is a nonrenewable resource that is used to make products such as motor gasoline, diesel, propane, jet fuel, ink, crayons, bubble gum, dish washing detergents, deodorant, eyeglasses, CDs and DVDs, tires, petroleum jelly, ammonia, plastics and some medicines.

Petroleum products give off the following harmful emissions when burned and therefore are bad for the environment and contribute to global warming and climate change:

  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Sulfur Dioxide
  • nitrogen oxides
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • particulate matter
  • lead
  • benzene
  • formaldehyde
