I would really like to implement a no shoes rule, but not only do I have quite a few shoes, I also live in an apartment. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t know my neighbors all that well, but I would feel uncomfortable leaving my shoes in the stairwell where they are completely unprotected. Help!

Thanks so much for this article. We have been trying to institute the no shoes rule for awhile but keep getting lazy. I am going to forward this to my husband and you can bet we will be a no shoes household as soon as possible. Thanks for the very practical advice

I just say the following: “We have a ‘no shoe’ rule in our home. Would you mind taking off your shoes?” Normally, our friends and family are very understanding, especially since our girls are still little.

I use a door mat outside and an area rugs inside. Our guests leave their shoes on the area rug, and we leave all of our shoes in our mud room.
